Makrinitsa

The "Repana Mansion" (the first thing someone encounters when entering the village), is located on the main  stone-paved road that connects the parking lot of Makrinitsa with the central square, which makes it easily accessible for people and luggage.

Makrinitsa is only 14 km from the modern city of Volos, 12 km from the ski resort at Hania (altitude 1200m) and 30 km from the Airport Anchialos.

A gateway to the beautiful beaches of Aegean Sea or Pagasitikos Gulf  with paths through  the wooded glens of Mount Pelion.

History

Makrinitsa`s settlement (called “The Balcony of Pelion”) began around 1200 A.C. and has gradually developed to a large village with an independent economy and trade connections with the major economic centers of the Mediterranean and Western Europe.

Main sources of income were the silk, spinning, tanning, farming and lumbering.

The mansions which exist today are features of the northern Greek architecture of the 17th century, as the rest of Pelion ,and reflect the richness of the last period of Ottoman rule.

The Village

Today, the main occupations of the inhabitants of Makrinitsa are tourism, agriculture (chestnuts, apples, herbs, etc.) and lumbering.

The microclimate of the village (humidity = zero) is superb all year round. The main square (altitude 650) with running waters and century-old plain trees joins the lower and upper quarters of the village with  a network of well-preserved cobble-stoned paths, full of beautiful trails, flower gardens, Byzantine churches and stone fountains.

In the taverns of Makrinitsa you can eat well or enjoy a drink in the bars of the village.
